Zambia blew us away—we never imagined seeing so many animals and learning so much. As impressive as the animals were, the Zambian people were extraordinary

Everything about this trip was superb!  Fanuel was the best guide I have ever experienced.  The places we stayed could not have been more perfect.  All staff was attentive and generous with their time. After more than 40 years of travel, I have found my Nirvana. What can I see or do now to match the experience?
    L. Laighold, New York, August 2013

This walking safari gives a real sense of wild Africa. The walks also give a sense of the place of early man in the natural world.  I felt really at home on the savannah and it is amazing that you can walk among the herd animals without them running off. I felt very much in contact with life. The entire experience was well supported. Despite being in the wild, we had all the comforts that were needed to make this a wonderful trip. We certainly felt spoiled by the great treatment we received.
    M. Reckase, Michigan, August 2013

Itinerary & Accommodations
Days 1 & 2 Mfuwe Lodge

Upon arrival in Lusaka, you’ll be met and transferred by light aircraft to Mfuwe, where your home for the next two nights will be the fabulous Mfuwe Lodge. Prolific game gives this region its renown: buffalo, antelope, giraffe, crocodile, and other impressive creatures will join you at the lodge’s lagoon. There are two game drives a day, one setting out at first light, and then another in late afternoon when wildlife is most active. In the evening, relax with sundowner cocktails, and then enjoy a new spectacle as spotlights pick out a parade of nocturnal creatures. You’ve arrived in animal-lovers’ paradise.

Included: Game drives, bush walks, and internal flight / breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Approximate Travel Time: 1 hour

Days 3 & 4 Zungulila Bushcamp

Today you head off on a morning game drive that takes you to Zungulila, your camp for the next two nights. You’ll journey deeper into the exceptional, lush diversity of South Luangwa National Park. This modern-day Eden has verdant floodplains alive with huge herds of game, mopane woodlands, and indigenous hardwood forests that sustain more than 400 species of birds. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa; the mighty river attracts thirsty animals like a magnet. Renowned explorer David Livingstone was one of the first to note the extraordinary riches of South Luangwa Valley, saying, “It is impossible to describe its luxuriance.”

On walking safaris and game drives around Zungulila, you will come to know the broad variety of habitat. As for wildlife watching, the area is so rich with opportunity; it’s hard to choose where to look first.

Included: Game drives and daily bush walks / breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Days 5 & 6 Kapamba Bushcamp

Leaving Zungulila Bushcamp on foot, enjoy a leisurely walk along the river, arriving at Kapamba in time for lunch. Hippopotamus, 14 different species of antelope, Thornicroft’s giraffe (unique to Luangwa Valley), eland, impala, kudu, baboons, vervet monkeys, and dozens of other animal species are prolific in Luangwa—as are 400 different species of birds.

During your stay, enjoy morning and afternoon walks, and day and night game drives. On night drives, look for sightings of the night ape and nocturnal bush baby.

Included: Game drives and daily bush walks / breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Days 7 & 8 Bilimungwe Bushcamp

The magic of Luangwa continues to enchant as, after a hearty breakfast, you set off on foot from Kapamba. A three-to-four-hour safari will take you through the bush to Bilimungwe Bushcamp, where you will spend the next two nights.

During the next two days, your expert guide will lead you on foot through untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam grassy plains and elephants pause to drink at fresh springs along the Luangwa riverbanks. Activities are focused around walking; day and night game drives will take you even further afield. In the evening, after wading through the river, join your hosts for sundowners, or sit around the campfire recounting the day’s adventures. Enjoy a starlit supper at your table overlooking the river.

Included: Game drives and daily bush walks / breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 9 Mfuwe

Following a final breakfast, you bid farewell to the extraordinary beauty of the South Luangwa Valley and all of the friends you have made along the way. You will be transferred to the Mfuwe airport for your included flight back to Lusaka.

Included: Departure game drive, transfer, and internal flight / breakfast and lunch

Approximate Travel Time: 4 hours

Our Guides

Guests who travel frequently with CW Safaris know that our guides truly set us apart from other adventure travel companies. All CW Safaris guides are locally based and fluent in English, with exceptional knowledge of the region where you’ll be traveling. Their expertise in wildlife and natural history and their keen, deeply rooted understanding of life in the African bush will ensure your safety, well-being, and enjoyment throughout every safari. You could not be in better hands!

Here is a sampling of our extraordinary guides in Zambia:

Peter Milanzi

Peter Milanzi

As a boy, Peter’s father worked for the Park Authorities. Growing up in Lochinvar National Park, his interest in wildlife got an early start. Skilled guiding runs in the family; his twin brother Misheck is also a guide. Peter’s first safari experience was as bartender in Luanga Valley safari camps, and he still mixes an excellent cocktail! Inspired by his father and brother, he became a guide in 2003.

When he is not expertly revealing the wonders of the African wilderness to visitors, Peter is a traveler himself; he has been to the United Kingdom and looks forward to further journeys with his wife, a teacher, and their young daughter. With his open heart and mind, he makes every safari a special pleasure.

Manda Zambia Guide

Manda Chisanga

As a child, Manda was taken by his grandfather on journeys around Zambia. These early travels set the stage for Manda’s lifelong fascination with his countryside and led to his career as a safari guide. He has spent most of his professional guiding time in South Luangwa National Park, and while he currently resides with his wife in Mfuwe, he has lived in all the Zambian provinces.

Manda’s rich knowledge of his homeland and his warm, compassionate nature make him an endearing partner on safari as he shares amusing anecdotes and engages in discussions about local issues. Manda’s qualities earned him the Paul Morrison Guide Award from Wanderlust magazine; he generously used his prize money to set up the Mfuwe Solar-Cooker Project.

Fannuel Zambia Guide

Fannuel Banda

Raised in Mfuwe, Fannuel was lucky to have his early interest in wildlife encouraged by his grandparents and other mentors. As a young man, he gained experience in the world of safari travel by working at related jobs including transfer driver and foreman for a lodge. His charm and spirit earned him an appearance on the BBC program No Going Back. After successfully passing his guide exams, Fannuel qualified as a walking guide and now welcomes guests into the wilderness at camps throughout the region. He lives with his wife and two young sons in Mfuwe.
