Dame Daphne Sheldrick—a conservationist and animal husbandry expert—has dedicated her life to rehabilitating and raising many wild species, particularly elephants.
Her book, Love, Life and Elephants: An African Love Story is a heartwarming memoir chronicling her efforts to preserve Kenya’s rich wildlife, as well as her fascinating life story, set amidst the tumultuous history of Kenya. It’s also an inspiring love story about the relationship Dame Daphne and her husband David, in whose memory she founded the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
This book will inspire any wildlife lover, and is a great one to read before setting off on safari. Reading it will enrich your connection to the wildlife and the tireless conservation efforts to protect them and their wilderness. If you are on safari in Kenya, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Elephant Orphanage founded by Sheldrick. If you visit during the noon-time public visit, you’ll like share the joy of watching these baby eles in a mud bath with local schoolchildren. You might also consider becoming a foster parent, which will afford you a private foster parent visit in the early evening.
This is my little elephant named Narok – it has been wonderful to follow her progress from dramatic rescue at just 18 months old, to partially independent now in Tsavo West National Park!
